Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition that occurs when the skin produces too much melanin which is the pigment that gives skin its color.
On the face, hyperpigmentation can appear as dark patches or spots that are darker than the surrounding skin. It can affect people of all skin types, but is more common in people with darker complexions.
- Some common types of hyperpigmentation include:
- Age spots darkened patches are caused by sun damage and are often found on the face and hands.
- Melasma larger areas of darkened skin are often caused by hormonal changes, such as those that occur during pregnancy or while taking birth control pills. Melasma often appears in a distinct pattern on the forehead and cheekbones.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation This type of hyperpigmentation can appear red or brown, especially in darker skin tones. People with darker skin tones are more likely to experience post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Hyperpigmentation is usually harmless and not life-threatening, but it can be stressful or cause people to feel self-conscious. Treatments for hyperpigmentation include:
- Photoprotection, such as wearing sunscreen that protects against both UV and visible light
- Topical therapies, such as hydroquinone, Vitamin C and E, Azelaic Serum
- Chemical peels
- Laser or light-based therapies
